Additional Information
"The Ferreros were like an ancient oak tree, from which no more new sprigs would shoot, but which would stand solemn and majestic, in the forecourt of the old House, till the day the thunder struck it...."; "The story of a family is often also the story of a nation and its people. That is what makes the kind of novels we call Sagas so interesting - and few are as fascinating as the large tapestry which the Author has woven around the house where Mrs. Caroline reigned as the matriarch of three generations. The book takes us over more than forty years; and the old house in Piedmont seems to mirror not only the loves and vicissitudes of the family, but the events and tragedies which have passed over Italy and the whole of Europe between the end of the last century and the end of those years we call peace. The technique of the narrative increases the interest - personal with a breath of poetry running through it; and each character standing out vividly alive: Mrs. Caroline, a great old lady; Marie, whose story is a book in itself; Charles, whose tragedy is so moving; and lastley Serge, so typically Italian, realist and dreamer, cynic and romantic..."; gift message (Christmas 1942) to the front pastedown; top and bottom of spine plus corners of covers are rubbed and bumped; edge wear to dj including minor creasing and nicks, plus small loss (less than 1%) at the top and bottom of the dj spine; dj is price clipped; dj is now protected by a wrap-around non-adhesive clear plastic cover; the cloth binding has some staining and fading, mainly near the edges of both boards and the spine, but also at the top of the front board; there is a very small amount of scattered foxing to the fore-edge of the final 40 or so pages; this true 1st edition is very scarce by this publisher, this copy is the only one I have been able to locate on the internet. All other 1st editions listed through the usual bookselling and booksearch sites give Howell, Soskin of New York as the publisher and a publication year of 1943 (the British Library online catalogue has only one entry. It lists the publisher as Hodder & Stoughton and publication year as 1942)
